URA Warns of Home Warranty Scam Targeting Local Homeowners
The Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh (URA) is warning local homeowners of a home warranty scam that is currently targeting City of Pittsburgh residents.
“Our office has been alerted by one of our housing program participants that she received a letter in the mail which appeared to be from the URA requesting her to call us regarding the expiration of home warranty coverage,” said Alicia Majors, URA Assistant Director of Housing Support. “This is a scam and is in no way authorized by or affiliated with the URA.”
The contents of the letter included the subject line, “RESPONSE TO THIS NOTICE REQUESTED,” with urgent text such as, “please call immediately as this will be our final attempt to notify you.” The letter also threatened that, “failure to call and prevent a potential lapse in coverage could result in you being liable for all costs associated with any home repairs.”
The URA will never send urgent letters such as this to homeowners requesting a call about their home warranty. Additionally, all communication from the URA will be on official letterhead with the URA logo and provide a phone number with the local area code.
Pittsburgh residents who have received a similar letter should not call the number provided and are encouraged to discard the letter.
Residents who have questions may call the URA at 412-255-6430.
