Biz District Spotlight: South Main Street

July 1, 2019

Business District: South Main Street

Neighborhood: West End

Reasons to visit: Catch a show, buy some artwork, antiques or fine furnishings, grab dinner and listen to live music…all in the West End!

  • Sample the Italian cuisine for lunch or dinner at the Village Tavern and Trattoria. It’s also a great spot to watch a game or listen to live music on weekend evenings.

  • Challenge your preconceived images of art and the gallery experience at James Gallery.

  • Take in a show at the Pittsburgh Musical Theater’s Gargaro Theater, housed in the former St. James School on South Main Street. You can also catch a review of the 2019-20 season, with the beautiful Pittsburgh skyline in the background at Broadway at the Overlook, an outdoor show held at the West End Overlook in early September.

  • Book lovers can visit the recently renovated West End Library, one of the oldest branches in the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh system.

  • Decorating or renovating? The West End has what you need! Visit Artifacts for art, antiques and fine furnishings, Ceramiche Tile and Stone for kitchen and bath needs, and Caldwell’s Windoware for draperies, blinds and shades.

Cool facts

  • The West End was originally known as Temperanceville, a village in Chartiers Township. It was so named because it was a ‘dry’ village – no alcohol was permitted to be sold!

  • South Main Street in the West End is the only neighborhood “main street” business district in Pittsburgh that has Main Street in its name.

  • Just up the hill from the West End is the West End-Elliott Overlook (in the Elliott neighborhood), home to arguably the best views of the Pittsburgh skyline. It’s a popular site for weddings and other celebrations, as well as Fourth of July firework viewing.
